The Struggle with Sharing

Now that I am a member (again, I participated back in 2008, with some success, by the way) again, I am starting to feel that old feeling of group involvement and protection. The group is an open forum...anyone can go there. I could place the link here, something I might do in the future, and allow my classmates and instructor to peek into the groups lives. I mean, this is a private blog. Only those who are invited can read it. So it's not like I would be betraying my group to the world, right? But still, I just can't bring myself to do that yet.

Part of the problem is that I, too, have bared my soul (and my body! if you look for profile pictures) to the world. My assumption is that even though the forum is completely open, none of my family, friends, classmates, or business partners will ever accidentally "stumble across" my very personal information at this site. If they ever do, it will be an embarrassment for me that I just can't yet imagine. This forum is the place where I tell people what my weight really is, where I admit the struggles I have with eating, where I respond to other's posts and try to encourage them to hang in there and stay strong, and where I lament about my own failings. In other words, it is a very public space with very private information that is protected, somewhat, by the fact that you must know exactly what you are looking for in order to find it.

And for now, I feel compelled to protect myself and my friends, at least for now, by not sharing the information here, even with you, my loyal classmates. :-)

  1. Bea--I am excited about the community you've chosen, and I admire you for sharing your thoughts with us--thank you! This note on feeling protective offers me special insight in-and-of itself, of the level of connection you already have to your community. And this should allow you some wonderful insights on the rhetoric you discover.

Thank you for sharing this blog and for inviting us along for the ride.

I can't wait to meet you in person!

  2. Thanks for the feedback Nancy. I worried a bit at first that this kind of exercise would be purely academic and have little meaning for me personally. Then I stumbled across this often emotional (so many different emotions) cooperative and occasionally collaborative space and realised I was wrong. I just hope the community continues to be active.

P.S. I cannot WAIT to meet you as well!
